An Island S Vanishing Culture

But time and economic forces are sweeping the last of the old ways from Daufuskie, thought to be a Yemassee Indian word meaning “field of blood.” Its cash crops - cotton and oysters - are gone, victims of disease and pollution. As men left for work on the mainland, the post-Civil-War population of mostly 1,200 ex-slaves dwindled. Now, less than a quarter of the island’s 181 full-time residents are black....

Analyst Hickey On Ea Battlefield And Mass Effect

Battlefield 3 has shown us impressive gameplay demos, yet as the 12-minute gameplay trailer makes clear, the game strays far from the traditional Battlefield experience. This may be the sort of thing Hickey had in mind when he came to the conclusion that in order for Battlefield to truly compete with Call of Duty, it will have to surpass CoD’s gameplay as well as keep up with the relentlessly steady pace at which the games are released....

Anatomy Of The O.J. Simpson Plot

With each call, Simpson grew more insistent. Stewart, concerned, dispatched a friend of his—a laborer and sometime bartender named Charles Cashmore—to the Palms, the hotel where O.J. was staying. Somebody needed to calm Simpson down. Stewart was also worried about O.J.’s alcohol intake. “[Stewart] said, ‘You’ve been drinking too much. Slow down’,” Lucherini says. At one point, Arnelle intervened, Lucherini says, and the two Simpsons argued over the phone. (Simpson attorney Yale Galanter declined to discuss evidence in the case; Arnelle Simpson didn’t respond to a request for comment....

Ancient Human Dna Found In Lice Glue Left On 2 000 Year Old Mummies

It’s inevitable that many will deal with a case of head lice at some point in their lives—and, apparently, it’s an affliction that ancient humans dealt with, too. As the study’s author, Alejandra Perotti, noted in 2018, “the reality is that humans have had head lice living on them for thousands of years.” “They were so common in the past that almost every family was in possession of a special comb to remove and keep them under control or in low numbers,” she said, adding that these combs were often made of bone, wood or cactus spine....

Ancient Palmyra S Catastrophic Fall Is Terrifying Premonition Of Our Future

In a study published in PLOS One on September 22, researchers from Denmark’s Aarhus University and the University of Bergen in Norway examined the causes behind the downfall of the ancient city of Palmyra; an oasis in what is now the Syrian desert that was once one of the most important cultural centers of the ancient world in the first and second centuries AD. Palmyra is thought to have fallen when it was subject to a Roman invasion around 272 to 273 AD, giving rise to legends of its ruler, Queen Zenobia, who challenged the Roman Empire but was ultimately defeated....

Anderson Wanted To Be Considered For England Captaincy

Alastair Cook stepped down as skipper after a 4-0 thrashing in India and Root was installed as his replacement in February. Ben Stokes and Stuart Broad were also thought to be high on the ECB’s shortlist and the former has been appointed Root’s vice-captain. England’s record wicket-taker in Tests was seemingly not in the frame and Anderson believes, at 34 years old, age counted against him. “I don’t know if I’d have taken the captaincy but it would have been nice to have been considered for it,” he said....

Packers Vs. Seahawks Props Rodgers And Co. Face Uphill Battle

The Packers were held to 16 points and Aaron Rodgers limited to 189 yards and one touchdown pass in that season-opening matchup, and the sledding will be difficult once again. Rodgers is on the Westgate Las Vegas SuperBook’s props board for 265 gross passing yards and two TD passes. We’re siding with the UNDER on each. Not only are the Seahawks playing lights-out football right now, but Rodgers has been hampered by a calf injury that clearly limits his ability to make plays outside of the pocket....
