Netflix’s anime continuation of Pacific Rim expands on the series’ already rich world building. As Taylor and Hayley Travis’ travels continue, they find a menacing group called The Territory of the Sisters, as they champion “The Kaiju Messiah.” Their computer Loa also teases their odds of survival are at 2%. This is a very tense and mysterious premise, and it could make for Pacific Rim’s finest adventure yet.

Pacific Rim: The Black debuted in 2021, with fans of the franchise embracing its darker tone, especially after the vapid nonsense that was Pacific Rim: Uprising. It was likely that film would’ve killed the series, but thankfully Netflix gave Pacific Rim another chance. However, this will be the final season of The Black, due to Netflix’s habit of keeping most shows on very brief runs. But anime fans are used to quality over quantity, and if this season sticks the landing, it’ll keep the Pacific Rim franchise on a strong note.

The Pacific Rim franchise started with Guillermo del Toro’s 2013 film. It instantly became a cult favorite, with many people considering it the finest mecha and kaiju film Hollywood’s ever produced. With its colorful characters, epic fights, and dense mythos, it was a summer blockbuster for the ages. Del Toro has a real Midas touch about him, as he can deliver popcorn action like Hellboy and Pacific Rim, as well as awards-friendly dramas like Pan’s Labyrinth and The Shape of Water, all with a consistency rarely seen since the golden age of Steven Spielberg.

And even better, Guillermo del Toro has maintained a strong relationship with Netflix, as they first produced his acclaimed animated franchise Trollhunters. And in the coming year, they’re also releasing his stop-motion adaptation of Pinocchio and his anthology series Cabinet of Curiosities. So Netflix is quickly is becoming the definitive service for del Toro fans, and the fact that they continued Pacific Rim is just the beginning.

How will Pacific Rim: The Black continue this epic franchise? And what’s all to come from this Netflix/del Toro partnership? With all of this and more coming up, 2022 will surely be one of Netflix’s most exciting years.

Pacific Rim: The Black returns on April 19th, 2022, exclusively on Netflix.
